Kazak
Kazak rugs come from the Caucasus region — the mountainous area between the Black Sea and the Caspian, spanning parts of modern Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. The tradition is tribal, and the designs reflect it: bold geometric medallions, strong primary colors, and a visual directness that doesn’t require explanation.
The palette runs toward deep reds, navy blues, ivory, and forest greens — colors derived from natural dyes that have proven themselves over centuries of use. The wool is typically coarser than Turkish Oushak, which gives Kazak rugs a more textured hand and a matte finish rather than a silky one.
Kazak rugs tend to work best where you want presence. A large Kazak in a neutral room makes the room. A smaller piece in a layered interior holds its own without competing. They’re rugs for people who know what they like.
The term “Kazak” is sometimes applied loosely to geometric rugs from other regions. At Boga Rugs, we’re specific: Caucasian construction, natural dyes, genuine tribal provenance. We’ll tell you what we know about the piece’s origin and age.
