Let's be honest about something. The oriental rug industry has a reputation — some of it earned — for opaque pricing, inflated claims, and high-pressure sales tactics. "Going out of business" sales that last for years. "$10,000 rug, today only $1,500." Vague country-of-origin claims. Machine-made rugs marketed as "hand-finished."

After nearly 20 years selling rugs in San Francisco, we've seen it all. This guide is what we'd tell a friend or family member who was about to spend a significant amount of money on a hand-knotted rug — the questions to ask, the red flags to watch for, and how to know if you're getting a fair deal.

Step One: Understand What You're Actually Buying

Before you walk into any showroom, understand the basic categories. The price difference between these categories is enormous, and dealers sometimes blur the lines on purpose.

Hand-Knotted Rugs

Each knot is tied by hand on a loom. This is what most people mean when they say "oriental rug" or "Persian rug." A quality 8x10 hand-knotted rug starts around $2,000-$3,000 for decent pieces and goes up to $30,000 or more for master-quality work.

How to verify: Flip the rug over. You should see individual knots on the back, with the pattern visible in detail. The weave will be slightly irregular — a human made it. If the back looks perfectly uniform or has a grid-like backing, it's not hand-knotted.

Hand-Tufted Rugs

A gun-like tool is used to push yarn through a fabric backing, which is then coated with latex glue to hold everything in place. These rugs are much cheaper to make than hand-knotted. An 8x10 hand-tufted rug runs $400-$2,000.

How to verify: The back will have a fabric or canvas backing, not visible knots. Hand-tufted rugs have a latex or glue smell when new, and the backing can deteriorate in 10-15 years.

Important: Hand-tufted is NOT the same as hand-knotted, but some dealers use "hand-made" or "hand-crafted" to describe both. Ask specifically: "Is this hand-knotted or hand-tufted?"

Machine-Made Rugs

Woven by machine. Can look beautiful, can be durable, can be a great value for certain uses — but they're not in the same category as hand-knotted rugs in terms of craft, longevity, or investment value. An 8x10 machine-made rug runs $100-$1,000.

How to verify: The back will be perfectly uniform, often with a visible grid or rubber backing. Machine-made rugs have a mechanical consistency that hand-knotted rugs don't.

Kilims and Flatweaves

These are hand-woven rugs with no pile — the pattern is created by the weaving itself. Lighter, often less expensive, and have their own distinct beauty. An 8x10 quality kilim runs $500-$3,000.

Not inferior — just a different tradition. Kilims are beautiful in their own right and work well in casual rooms.

Step Two: Know the Questions to Ask

When you walk into a showroom, these are the questions that separate serious dealers from opportunists:

1. "Is this rug hand-knotted, hand-tufted, or machine-made?"

A legitimate dealer will answer immediately and specifically. If you get a vague answer like "it's hand-crafted" or "made in the traditional way," push harder. You want the specific construction method.

2. "Where was this rug made?"

The honest answer is a specific country and, ideally, a specific region or city. "Made in the East" or "traditional pattern" is not a real answer. If the dealer can't name the country of origin, walk away.

3. "How old is this rug?"

For antique rugs, you want an honest estimate — "circa 1920s" or "approximately 80 years old." For new rugs, you want to know when it was made. Beware of vague claims like "this is an antique" without any specifics about age.

4. "What are the fibers?"

Wool? Silk? Wool with silk highlights? Cotton foundation? The answer should be specific. You can actually test this yourself — burn a small fiber (pulled from the fringe if possible, or ask the dealer to do it for you). Wool smells like burning hair; silk smells similar but softer; synthetic fibers melt and smell like plastic.

5. "What's the knot count?"

For hand-knotted rugs, this is a standard measure. A dealer should be able to estimate it, or ideally know it precisely. "200 knots per square inch" is a real answer. "Very fine" is not.

6. "Can I see the dealer's appraisal or certification?"

For higher-value rugs, a legitimate dealer should be able to provide documentation — either their own written appraisal or certification from a rug authority. This is common for rugs over $5,000.

7. "What's your return policy?"

A reputable dealer stands behind their rugs. You should be able to return a rug within a reasonable window (often 7-14 days) if it doesn't work in your space. Be very cautious of "all sales final" for anything over $1,000.

8. "Do you offer a trial period so I can see it in my room?"

Good dealers will let you take a rug home for a few days to see how it looks in your actual space. Light, furniture, and room color affect how a rug looks dramatically. If a dealer refuses to let you try it at home, that's a signal.

Step Three: Understand Pricing

Rug pricing is one of the most confusing parts of the buying process. Here's how to think about it honestly.

The Factors That Actually Determine Price

  1. Country and region of origin — Iranian Tabriz and Turkish Hereke cost more than Indian reproductions
  2. Age — Quality antiques (50+ years) cost more than new rugs of similar workmanship
  3. Size — Obviously. A 10x14 takes more than 2x the work of an 8x10.
  4. Knot count — Higher knot count = more labor = higher price
  5. Materials — Silk costs more than wool. Natural dyes cost more than synthetic.
  6. Condition — For antiques, condition is everything. A mint-condition 100-year-old rug can be worth 5x what a damaged one of the same age is worth.
  7. Rarity — Unusual patterns, rare regions, or known weavers add value
  8. Provenance — A rug with documented history (e.g., from a specific collection or workshop) is worth more

The "Going Out of Business" Trap

You've probably seen these signs. "Going out of business — 70% off!" The signs stay up for years. The prices never change. This is a sales tactic, not a real closing sale.

The rule: If a dealer has been "going out of business" for more than six months, the discount isn't real. The "original price" was inflated specifically so the "sale price" would look appealing.

Honest rug dealers don't need this. They price fairly and stand behind their work.

The "Certificate of Authenticity" Trap

Some dealers include a glossy certificate of authenticity with every rug. These documents often list an "appraised value" that's 2-3x what you paid — suggesting you got a great deal. In reality, the appraised value is set by the dealer themselves and has no independent basis.

The rule: An appraisal is only meaningful if it comes from an independent appraiser you trust, not from the seller.

What a Fair Price Actually Looks Like

For a decent-quality 8x10 hand-knotted rug: - Entry level (new, Indian or Pakistani, lower knot count): $1,500-$3,000 - Mid-range (new, Turkish Oushak or Persian copy, medium knot count): $3,000-$6,000 - High quality (new, Persian from named city, fine knot count): $6,000-$15,000 - Master quality / antique: $10,000-$50,000+

If a dealer offers you a "high quality Persian 8x10" for $800, it's not high quality. It's probably machine-made or hand-tufted. If a dealer offers you an "antique Persian 8x10" for $25,000, it might be fairly priced — but you should verify the age, condition, and origin before writing that check.

Red Flags to Walk Away From

  1. High-pressure sales tactics — "This rug is only available today" or "I have another customer interested"
  2. Vague country of origin — "Eastern" or "traditional" instead of a specific country
  3. No visible business license or physical showroom — Avoid "rug sales" events in hotel ballrooms and temporary locations
  4. Claims of "hand-made" without specifying hand-knotted vs hand-tufted
  5. Prices that swing wildly — "Normally $10,000, today $1,200"
  6. No return policy or no trial period
  7. Reluctance to let you examine the back of the rug
  8. Claims you can't verify — "This is from the palace of [famous person]" with no documentation
  9. Aggressive discounting — Legitimate dealers rarely discount more than 15-20% below asking price

Green Lights That Indicate a Trustworthy Dealer

  1. Long-term physical showroom in an established neighborhood
  2. Willingness to let you examine rugs closely and take them home to try
  3. Specific, detailed answers to technical questions
  4. Reasonable return and trial policies
  5. Independent appraisals available on request
  6. Online reviews and long-term customer relationships
  7. Transparent pricing that reflects the actual factors driving value
  8. No pressure — they want you to make an informed decision
  9. Knowledge and enthusiasm — good dealers love their rugs and love talking about them

Why Where You Buy Matters as Much as What You Buy

The same rug from a trustworthy dealer and a shady one isn't the same purchase. Here's why:

From a trustworthy dealer you get: - An honest assessment of what you're buying - Proper cleaning and maintenance advice - Service and repair relationships for the life of the rug - Recourse if something isn't as described - An ongoing resource as your collection grows

From a shady dealer you get: - A one-time transaction with no follow-up - Inflated claims you can't verify - No recourse if you're unhappy - Often, a rug worth less than you paid

The right dealer becomes your rug person for life. Our grandchildren clean rugs we sold our customers' grandparents. That's what a good rug relationship looks like.

What to Do Before You Buy

  1. Visit 2-3 different dealers before making a decision
  2. Take photos and notes on the rugs you're considering
  3. Measure your room and bring the measurements
  4. Check online reviews — Google, Yelp, and specialty rug forums
  5. Ask to see the back of every rug you're seriously considering
  6. Take advantage of trial periods — seeing a rug in your actual room is irreplaceable
  7. Don't rush — a rug is a long-term purchase, not an impulse buy
  8. Ask for documentation on any rug over $3,000
