Rug Cleaning in Nob Hill, San Francisco
Nob Hill's pre-war apartments and historic residences often contain beautiful antique rugs — and the challenge isn't just cleaning them, it's moving them through narrow doorways, up tight staircases, and past sensitive floors without damage. We've been doing exactly that for Nob Hill clients since 2007. Free pickup, hand-washed cleaning, and careful handling at every step.
Cleaning Rugs in Historic Apartments
Nob Hill is different from most San Francisco neighborhoods when it comes to rugs. Instead of single-family Victorians with wide hallways and modern renovations, Nob Hill is mostly pre-war apartments, grand co-ops, and historic residential buildings — many of them landmarked. These buildings were designed for a different era of furniture and different expectations about moving things in and out.
What that means practically: narrow elevators, original hardwood floors that can't take heavy equipment, service entrances that require coordination with building staff, and doorways that weren't designed for 10x14 rugs to come through rolled. We've developed specific workflows for each of the major Nob Hill buildings we service, and we know how to coordinate with your building's doorman, manager, or co-op board to make pickup and delivery smooth.
If you live in a Nob Hill building and you have a rug that needs professional care, we handle all the logistics — you just let us know when we can come.
Our Cleaning Process
Every rug is hand-washed on our shop floor. We never use rotary cleaners, steam extractors, or in-home cleaning for hand-knotted rugs. Our process:
- Inspection and documentation
- Mechanical dusting to remove embedded grit
- Hand washing with cold water and pH-neutral soap
- Thorough rinsing
- Slow drying on flat racks in climate-controlled space
Nob Hill Pickup & Delivery
Pickup from Nob Hill buildings is typically scheduled 3-5 days in advance to coordinate with building staff. We can work directly with your doorman, HOA, or building manager to arrange access. For pickup:
- Tell us the building address and any service entrance requirements
- Confirm elevator or staircase access for large rugs
- Note any quiet hours or delivery restrictions
We'll handle the rest — and we return the rug to the exact spot you want it when the cleaning is done.
Common Rug Issues in Nob Hill Apartments
Cleaning rugs in Nob Hill apartments raises issues you don't see in single-family homes:
Runners in narrow hallways. Many Nob Hill apartments have long, narrow hallways that require custom-length runners. Cleaning a 2.5x14 or 3x16 runner takes specialized handling — we lay the full length flat on our wash floor, work it in sections, and rinse from one end to the other to prevent color bleeding. Most local cleaners fold runners in half during cleaning, which creates center creases. We don't.
Persian and Turkish rugs in small rooms. Nob Hill apartments often have smaller rooms than single-family homes, which means smaller rugs — 5x7, 6x9, 8x10 common sizes. For these sizes we can usually clean and return within a week. If you have multiple smaller rugs to clean at once, we can bundle the pickup and delivery for efficiency.
Building-restricted hours. Some historic buildings have strict rules about deliveries, noise, and contractor access. We work within these constraints — quiet hours, service elevators only, appointment windows as narrow as 30 minutes. Tell us the rules and we'll comply.
Radiator damage. Many Nob Hill apartments still have cast iron radiators that can scorch wool rugs placed too close. We inspect rugs for heat damage during cleaning and can suggest pad and placement solutions to prevent future damage.
Pre-war sub-flooring. Underneath the hardwood in many older Nob Hill buildings is pre-war sub-flooring that's more sensitive to moisture than modern construction. When you do use a rug pad, make sure it's 100% natural rubber and felt — never PVC or synthetic rubber, which can permanently stain these older floors.

- Written estimate before any work begins — no surprises, no hidden fees
