Rug Cleaning in the Inner Richmond, San Francisco
The Inner Richmond is one of San Francisco's most diverse neighborhoods — historically, culturally, and architecturally. It's also home to a remarkable range of oriental and Asian rugs, from traditional Chinese antiques to modern wool runners in family-owned apartments. We've been cleaning them all since 2007. Hand-washed, carefully handled, free pickup and delivery.
A Neighborhood with Deep Rug Traditions
The Inner Richmond has one of the most interesting rug populations of any San Francisco neighborhood. Because of its historical role as a home to immigrant communities from across Asia — Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and more — many Inner Richmond homes contain rugs from traditions that most SF specialists rarely see: classical Chinese antique rugs with sculpted relief patterns, Japanese tatami-adjacent textiles, Central Asian tribal pieces, and modern oriental rugs acquired directly from family ties overseas.
These aren't just decoration. Many of these rugs have deep personal and family history, and cleaning them requires sensitivity to what they are and where they came from. We've worked with Inner Richmond families since 2007, and we've developed particular expertise with Chinese Art Deco rugs, classical Peking carpets, and the softer, more muted palettes common in East Asian rug traditions.
If you have a rug in the Inner Richmond that feels different from the standard Persian or Turkish oriental, we'd love to take a look. It might be something special.
Our Cleaning Process
Every rug is hand-washed at our shop. We never use steam or in-home cleaning equipment on hand-knotted pieces. The process:
- Inspection — fiber identification (especially important for Chinese and silk pieces), dye stability test, condition documentation
- Mechanical dusting before water contact
- Hand washing with cold water and pH-neutral soap
- Thorough rinsing
- Slow drying on flat racks in climate-controlled space
For Chinese antique rugs and silk pieces, we sometimes adjust the process — lower water temperatures, longer drying times, more delicate handling. Full process →
Inner Richmond Pickup & Delivery
The Inner Richmond is about 10 minutes from our shop. Pickup and delivery are usually same-day or next-day for scheduled clients. For family homes with multiple rugs, we can coordinate a single visit to collect several pieces at once and return them together — useful if you're doing seasonal cleaning or preparing for a move.
What We See in Inner Richmond Homes
Twenty years of cleaning Inner Richmond rugs shows us patterns unique to this neighborhood:
Chinese antique and Art Deco rugs. The Inner Richmond has more classical Chinese rugs per capita than almost anywhere else in the Bay Area. These include traditional Peking carpets (sometimes with sculpted relief patterns that take specialized handling), Chinese Art Deco pieces from the 1920s-40s, and modern Chinese production rugs. Each era and style requires slightly different cleaning technique — we adjust based on what we're looking at. For sculpted Chinese rugs in particular, we use gentler agitation to protect the carved pile relief.
Silk rugs and silk highlights. Many Inner Richmond oriental rugs contain silk — either as the primary fiber or as highlights in predominantly wool rugs. Silk is beautiful but tricky: it's sensitive to pH, water temperature, agitation, and drying conditions. The wrong cleaning can permanently dull silk or cause fiber damage. We test every silk-containing rug before cleaning and adjust our process accordingly. If a local cleaner has told you they can clean your silk rug for $50, they can't — not properly.
Family heirloom rugs with sentimental value. Many Inner Richmond clients bring us rugs that have been in their families for decades — sometimes generations — and that carry significant sentimental weight. We understand that these pieces aren't about resale value or investment; they're about history and memory. We clean them with that in mind. We never cut fringe to make them look "fresh," we never aggressive-treat stains that tell stories, and we document the rug before and after so you have a record of its care.
Compact apartment living. The Inner Richmond has many families in apartments and flats, which means rugs in close quarters with active daily life. We handle smaller rugs (3x5, 4x6) that many high-end cleaners won't take, and we offer discounts on bulk cleaning for families with multiple rugs.
Moth damage from long storage. Some Inner Richmond rugs have been stored in closets, attics, or basements for years — sometimes decades — between active use. Long storage without regular inspection invites moth damage, and we sometimes see rugs that have been partially consumed before the damage was discovered. If you have rugs in storage that haven't been looked at recently, please bring them in. We can identify moth activity, stop it, and often restore the damage through reweaving.
