Rug Cleaning in Russian Hill, San Francisco

Russian Hill's steep streets, historic apartment buildings, and hidden staircases make rug pickup and delivery an adventure — one we've been navigating since 2007. Whether you live in a classic Lombard Street building, a pre-war co-op on Hyde, or a renovated Victorian off Polk, we'll handle your rug with the care it deserves. Hand-washed cleaning, free pickup, and thoughtful logistics.

A Neighborhood Built on Hills

Russian Hill is one of the most architecturally rich neighborhoods in San Francisco — and one of the most logistically challenging for service work. The streets are some of the steepest in the city. Many buildings have no driveway access, no garage, and narrow walk-up entries. Cable cars clang past some blocks, and Lombard Street's famous curves bring tourists right past others.

What makes Russian Hill interesting for a rug specialist is that the homes and apartments inside these historic buildings often contain beautiful antique and oriental rugs — pieces that have been in the same family for decades, sometimes generations. They were originally carried up those same steep stairs years ago, and they need to come back down (carefully) when it's time to clean them.

We've developed specific workflows for Russian Hill's unique logistics: timing pickups to avoid cable car hours, coordinating with building managers for elevator access, using smaller vehicles for narrow alleys, and carrying rugs down multiple flights when there's no other option.

Our Cleaning Process

Every rug is hand-washed at our shop. We never use in-home cleaning or steam equipment on hand-knotted rugs. The process:

  1. Inspection and condition documentation
  2. Mechanical dusting before any water
  3. Hand washing with cold water and pH-neutral soap
  4. Thorough rinsing
  5. Slow drying on flat racks in climate-controlled space

Russian Hill Pickup & Delivery

Pickup in Russian Hill takes a little more planning than other neighborhoods, but we've got it down. When you schedule:

  • Give us your address and building type (apartment, condo, townhome, single-family)
  • Tell us about access — elevator? walk-up? driveway? street parking only?
  • Let us know the rug size so we can bring the right vehicle and crew
  • Share any building restrictions — quiet hours, delivery windows, contractor rules

We'll confirm a time that works for you and your building. For walk-up buildings, we'll send two people for anything larger than 6x9 so nobody has to wrestle a rug down three flights alone.

What We See in Russian Hill Homes

Two decades of cleaning rugs on Russian Hill reveals a few consistent patterns:

Historic building hardwood. Many Russian Hill buildings have original 1920s or 1930s hardwood — gorgeous, irreplaceable, and extremely sensitive to moisture, synthetic rug pads, and the wrong kind of cleaning. Always use 100% natural rubber and felt pads in these buildings. Never let anyone put a PVC pad on historic SF hardwood.

Transport damage during moves. Russian Hill's steep stairs and narrow hallways mean rugs get bent, scraped, or rolled too tightly when they're moved in and out of homes by general movers. When we arrive for a cleaning pickup, we sometimes find damage from the last move — fringe torn, edges crushed, corners folded permanently. Most of it is fixable during the cleaning if we catch it, but we'll tell you honestly what we can and can't restore.

Pre-war runners in narrow halls. Russian Hill apartments often have long, narrow entry halls that call for runners — 2.5x10, 2.5x12, sometimes 3x14 custom lengths. Cleaning runners takes specific technique; we lay them flat on our wash floor and work in sections. Most shops fold runners during cleaning, which creates permanent creases. We don't.

Fog-damaged foundations. Russian Hill's elevation puts some homes right at the fog line, where moisture sits heavily even on sunny days. Wool rugs in these homes can develop foundation dampness you can't see but can smell (a slight mustiness). We can treat this during cleaning, but if it's caught too late, permanent mildew in the foundation may limit what we can restore. If your rug has a smell that won't go away with vacuuming, call us sooner rather than later.

Smaller rugs in dense apartments. Many Russian Hill apartments favor smaller rugs — 3x5, 4x6, 5x8 — because the rooms are smaller than single-family homes. These are easier and cheaper to clean, and we can usually complete the work in 3-5 days from pickup to delivery. For clients with multiple smaller rugs, we offer bulk cleaning discounts on orders of 4+ rugs.

Free Estimates

Every rug is different, and so is every quote. Your estimate depends on the rug's fiber type, size, age, condition, and what it needs — so we never quote sight-unseen from a price list.

Here's what we offer instead:

  • Free in-home or in-shop inspection — we look at your rug, not a spreadsheet
  • Written estimate before any work begins — no surprises, no hidden fees
  • No commitment until you approve — you review the quote and decide
