Rug Cleaning in Sea Cliff, San Francisco

Sea Cliff is one of San Francisco's most beautiful neighborhoods — and one of the hardest on oriental rugs. Constant ocean air, salt, fog, and sun exposure all work against wool and silk over time. We've been protecting Sea Cliff's significant rug collections since 2007. Hand-washed cleaning, salt-air treatment, and preventive care advice tailored to oceanfront homes.

Where the Ocean Meets the Rugs

Sea Cliff sits at the western edge of San Francisco, directly above the Pacific Ocean, looking out over Lands End and the Marin Headlands. The views are some of the most dramatic in the city, and the homes are among the most significant — many of them early 20th-century estates that have been in the same families for generations.

These homes often contain substantial oriental rug collections. It's not unusual for a Sea Cliff home to have five, ten, or more hand-knotted rugs, some of them quite valuable. What's unique about Sea Cliff is the environmental challenge: the same ocean air that makes the neighborhood beautiful also creates constant moisture, salt deposition, and UV exposure that slowly degrades wool, silk, and natural dyes.

Most of our longest-running Sea Cliff clients have standing service arrangements with us — scheduled cleanings every 1-2 years instead of the standard 2-3 years for other neighborhoods, plus mid-cycle inspections during wet months. If you live in Sea Cliff and you own significant rugs, we'd recommend at least one in-person consultation to assess what you have and what it needs.

Our Cleaning Process

Every rug is hand-washed on our shop floor. We never use steam or in-home cleaning. For Sea Cliff rugs specifically, we add a salt treatment step to remove ocean-air residue that builds up over time. Our process:

  1. Inspection for fiber condition, dye stability, and salt/moisture exposure
  2. Mechanical dusting before water contact
  3. Hand washing with cold water and pH-neutral soap
  4. Salt-residue rinse (Sea Cliff addition)
  5. Thorough final rinsing
  6. Slow drying on flat racks in climate-controlled space

Sea Cliff Pickup & Delivery

Sea Cliff is about 15-20 minutes from our shop depending on traffic and the route through the Presidio. We can usually schedule pickups within 48-72 hours, and for ongoing service clients we maintain a standing schedule that works around your calendar.

For larger or more valuable pieces, we can arrange an in-home inspection before transport. A team member will come to your home, document the rug with photos, give you a written estimate, and only move the rug if you're ready. For insurance and estate purposes, this documentation is often as valuable as the cleaning itself.

What We See in Sea Cliff Homes

Twenty years of caring for rugs in Sea Cliff has taught us what to watch for:

Salt accumulation in fibers. Ocean air carries microscopic salt particles that settle onto rugs near windows, under sliding doors, and in rooms with bay views. Over years, this salt embeds in the wool and can contribute to fiber brittleness and dye fading. We've developed a specific rinsing process for Sea Cliff rugs that removes salt residue more thoroughly than standard cleaning — it's included in every Sea Cliff service visit at no extra charge.

UV damage from ocean-facing windows. The most beautiful views often come with the worst sun exposure. Rugs near west-facing windows in Sea Cliff can fade significantly in as little as 5-10 years, especially in the purples, reds, and some greens. We can't reverse UV damage, but we can advise on rotation schedules and window treatments that dramatically slow the process. For clients with particularly valuable rugs in high-UV rooms, we sometimes recommend alternating between two rugs — one in service, one in storage — with annual rotation.

Foundation moisture and mildew. Wool rugs in high-humidity rooms closer to the ocean can develop foundation moisture that's invisible from the top but detectable underfoot. If your rug feels slightly damp or has any hint of a musty smell, it needs professional cleaning and drying before the foundation deteriorates permanently. Catch it early and we can almost always save the rug. Wait too long and the foundation wool can become unrestorable.

Antique and estate collection rugs. Sea Cliff has some of the most significant private rug collections in Northern California. Many of these rugs are 50-100+ years old, with documented provenance and appraised values in the tens of thousands of dollars. We handle these pieces with the same care a museum conservator would — slow, methodical, documented, insured. If you have inherited an estate collection and aren't sure what you have or what it needs, we can do a full inventory assessment as a separate service.

Insurance documentation needs. High-value homeowners insurance in Sea Cliff often requires regular appraisal updates on significant rugs. We work with several Sea Cliff insurance brokers on documentation — pre-cleaning photos, condition reports, and (when needed) certified appraisals through our network of qualified appraisers.

Free Estimates

Every rug is different, and so is every quote. Your estimate depends on the rug's fiber type, size, age, condition, and what it needs — so we never quote sight-unseen from a price list.

Here's what we offer instead:

  • Free in-home or in-shop inspection — we look at your rug, not a spreadsheet
  • Written estimate before any work begins — no surprises, no hidden fees
  • No commitment until you approve — you review the quote and decide
